The perfect-fifth interval is featured in guitar playing and in sequences of chords. The sequence of fifth intervals built on the C-major scale is used in the construction of triads, which is discussed below.
Many have contributed to our teaching philosophy. We’ve blended that from traditional and modern masters, virtuosos and our Faculty’s very own wealth of experience. Masters like Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Dionisio Aguado, and Andres Segovia inspired us. The modern masters including David Russell, John Williams, Julian Bream, Pepe Romero, James Smith, and Scott Tennant have emboldened us. Flamenco guitar virtuosos such as Paco de Lucia, Paco Pena, and Pepe Habicuela have also influenced us. They have provided the foundation to our program. We proudly provide both classical guitar and Flamenco guitar lessons as well as a wide variety of supplementary classes (see our curriculum page for the full syllabus). **NEW** We now offer Brazilian guitar lessons as well.
One of the major shortcomings of guitar tabs is that they don’t tell you exactly when to play the notes. If you’re having a hard time playing the music to a good rhythm, try another piece or consider learning to read standard music notation.

Jim Campilongo (www.jimcampilongo.com) “Justin is an instructor with that rare combination that encompasses great playing in conjunction with a thoughtful, likable personality. Justin’s instruction is extremely intelligent because he’s smart enough to know the ‘basics’ don’t have to be served ‘raw’ – Justin keenly serves the information covered in chocolate. Justin’s site is like a free pass in a candy store!”
We promote progress by marking students’ achievements with awards and certificates. By completing monthly practice plans, graduating to new books and performing in recitals, students receive awards that keep them excited about learning.
It should first be pointed out that calling them “nylon” strings is a bit misleading. As noted below, there are several different materials that go into what more properly could be called classical guitar strings. You’ll also notice that the bass strings are constructed differently from the trebles.
Hi. My name is John Huldt. I’m originally from Sweden but have called Los Angeles home since 2006. I have about 15 years experience teaching and I also hold a teaching position at the Los Angeles College for Music. I teach all ages from 7 and up and all levels and most styles. My teaching philosophy is that if the student doesn’t understand something, it’s always the teachers fault and I individualize every lessons to each student.
You might think of strings as a no-brainer purchase, but they are not all created equal. So whether you are about to string up your first instrument or frustrated with your current brand, here are four key factors to remember:
On April 10, 2010, Ultimate Guitar (UG), a Russian, free on-line tablature site, entered a licensing agreement with Harry Fox Agency. The agreement included rights for lyrics display, title search and tablature display with download and print capabilities. HFA’s over 44,000 represented publishers have the opportunity to opt into the licensing arrangement with UG.
Traditional electromagnetic pickups are either single-coil or double-coil. Single-coil pickups are susceptible to noise induced by stray electromagnetic fields, usually mains-frequency (60 or 50 hertz) hum. The introduction of the double-coil humbucker in the mid-1950s solved this problem through the use of two coils, one of which is wired in opposite polarity to cancel or “buck” stray fields.
GuitarTabs.com has been contacted by the NMPA and MPA with similar copyright infringement allegations. The NMPA and MPA have also threatened Guitar Tab Universe with similar legal action. A copy of the certified letter received by the site owner, along with a brief note similar to the one posted on Mxtabs, has been posted on their website.
Learn a fun two-bar double-stop blues riff. This one is all about a blues rhythm with a swing feel. You’ll notice that the open-string double-stops in the first measure use staccato to give a short, noticeable sound. In […]
Bolt-on necks, though they are historically associated with cheaper instruments, do offer greater flexibility in the guitar’s set-up, and allow easier access for neck joint maintenance and repairs. Another type of neck, only available for solid body electric guitars, is the neck-through-body construction. These are designed so that everything from the machine heads down to the bridge are located on the same piece of wood. The sides (also known as wings) of the guitar are then glued to this central piece. Some luthiers prefer this method of construction as they claim it allows better sustain of each note. Some instruments may not have a neck joint at all, having the neck and sides built as one piece and the body built around it.
The feel and format of the lessons is also very polished, with an easily navigable site, a comprehensive and customizable lesson dashboard, and an advanced video player. The videos themselves are filmed in high definition, with multiple angles on screen at one time to aid tuition.

We purchased a 12-lesson package for my daughter as a Christmas Gift. My daughter is 14 years old, and after completing these lessons her love for music has grown. She had only taken a beginner’s level course in piano and guitar prior to working with Mauricio. My daughter looked forward to every lesson, and would come home to keep practicing and improving her skills. We plan to work with Mauricio again in the near future and would highly recommend him!
When playing seventh chords, guitarists often play only subset of notes from the chord. The fifth is often omitted. When a guitar is accompanied by a bass, the guitarist may omit the bass note from a chord. As discussed earlier, the third of a triad is doubled to emphasize its major or minor quality; similarly, the third of a seventh is doubled to emphasize its major or minor quality. The most frequent seventh is the dominant seventh; the minor, half-diminished, and major sevenths are also popular.
Drop tunings are common in hard rock and heavy metal music. In drop-D tuning, the standard tuning’s E-string is tuned down to a D note. With drop-D tuning, the bottom three strings are tuned to a root-fifth-octave (D-A-D) tuning, which simplifies the playing of power chords.

While the first half of the song can be thought of in the key of Em, you’ll find that it’s easier to quickly transpose the chords if you relate them all to the tonic key of G major, as you’ll see here.
Buying the right strings is the fastest and most economical way to boost your setup. Great strings give you glorious tone, comfortable feel and reliability from gig-to-gig. Bad strings make your songs plod, your fingers sore and your wallet a little emptier each night when the ‘E’ string pings off.
