The neck joint or heel is the point at which the neck is either bolted or glued to the body of the guitar. Almost all acoustic steel-string guitars, with the primary exception of Taylors, have glued (otherwise known as set) necks, while electric guitars are constructed using both types. Most classical guitars have a neck and headblock carved from one piece of wood, known as a “Spanish heel.” Commonly used set neck joints include mortise and tenon joints (such as those used by C. F. Martin & Co.), dovetail joints (also used by C. F. Martin on the D-28 and similar models) and Spanish heel neck joints, which are named after the shoe they resemble and commonly found in classical guitars. All three types offer stability.

I later on accepted a scholarship for violin performance at the University of Miami for my Bachelor of Music, and earned my Master of Music from Florida State University. I also taught string orchestras for 10 years at Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center, South Florida Youth Symphony as conductor (and now composer!), and conductor of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony. I was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Alhambra Orchestra for two seasons under the guidance of my high school orchestra teacher, Mr. Reginald Nicholson (1947-2011). It was here where I was able to work on my compositions, orchestrations, and conduct a fine group of musicians.

To make things simpler, guitarists typically refer to an entire set of strings by the size of the high E string.  So according to the previous example, a set of medium strings would simply be an “11“.

Pierre Bensusan on justinguitar.com! For example, in the “Understanding Keys” lesson below I will teach you a quick method that will enable you to figure out any major key in your head. That is great, but any method requires you to think a little bit. What the overall goal though is to eventually use the methods taught enough that you simply know the notes of say an A Major scale without needing to use a method to figure them out anymore.

A phrase here does not require a strict definition. Think of it as the smallest piece of musical structure you intend to string together. The first argument to phrase is a string describing notes of a specific pitch (or rests: “r”), separated in time by spaces. For chords, just remove spaces to indicate simultaneous notes. Integers are appended to indicate the octave number so that the pitch is unique. For example, a rest followed by a sequence of notes might be given by notes = “r a2 c3 f3 d3 a3 f3”.

I always try to tailor the lesson to the students needs and musical preferences while keeping core skills that we will try to always incorporate (reading music/ theory for more advanced students, ear training etc.) I’m very passionate about teaching and believe it’s imperative as a musician to be able to share the knowledge and experience I’ve acquired along my musical path.

You lower the action by taking the strings off and working with the saddle. The saddle is that little white plastic or bone piece on your bridge that the strings flow over. You take it out, then sand down the bottom using 60 gauge sandpaper.

Regardless of the type of guitar musicians play, the quality of their instrument directly affects the sound. MIDI converters use a hexaphonic guitar signal to determine pitch, duration, attack, and decay characteristics. The MIDI sends the note information to an internal or external sound bank device. The resulting sound closely mimics numerous instruments. The MIDI setup can also let the guitar be used as a game controller (i.e., Rock Band Squier) or as an instructional tool, as with the Fretlight Guitar.

When all is said and done, the only way to know for sure what a set of strings will sound like on your guitar is to take them for a spin. However you like to approach your string shopping, the amazing selection you’ll find here is sure to satisfy.

Electric guitars, introduced in the 1930s, use an amplifier and a loudspeaker that both makes the sound of the instrument loud enough for the performers and audience to hear, and, given that it produces an electric signal when played, that can electronically manipulate and shape the tone using an equalizer (e.g., bass and treble tone controls) and a huge variety of electronic effects units, the most commonly used ones being distortion (or “overdrive”) and reverb. Early amplified guitars employed a hollow body, but a solid wood body was eventually found more suitable during the 1960s and 1970s, as it was less prone to unwanted acoustic feedback “howls”. As with acoustic guitars, there are a number of types of electric guitars, including hollowbody guitars, archtop guitars (used in jazz guitar, blues and rockabilly) and solid-body guitars, which are widely used in rock music.

  1. This post introduces a new R package I am working on called tabr for creating guitar tablature (“tabs”) from R code. The tabr package provides programmatic music notation and a wrapper around LilyPond for creating quality guitar tablature.
It’s sad that there are only two lesson sites that you consider worthwhile. Surely there are more than that. Like Berklee, Udemy, Lick Library, Guitar for Beginners and Beyond, Guitar Workshop Plus, Learn and Master Guitar, True Fire and probable others. I also don’t understand your high rating for Jamorama (I still have the files from 2006!) considering your low opinion of it, which I agree with.
