In this week’s guitar lesson you’ll learn how to play a heavy blues lead on electric guitar (although you can play the first half on acoustic if that’s all you have). You’ll learn how to play the chord changes in this 12 bar blues structure. Included MP3 jam track and tablature.

, I have always gotten frustrated -or bored- and gave up before I ever even learned a chord. Our 1st lesson, Paul started me with some very basic mechanics. It was just the right amount of information to keep me interested and challenged but not so much that I was overwhelmed the 1st week. From just 15 -30 minutes a day of practicing, I have already gained some flexibility in my fingers and am beginning to have a “feel” for the instrument. I have seen more improvement and learned more from Paul and the exercises he has given me in just 2 lessons than I have collectively ever learned from any other teacher in the past or any book or online tutorial. His knowledge of the instrument, as well as music theory, is vast and he knows how to break it down into digestible bits for maximum benefit to the student. So I am not only learning to play guitar, I am also being introduced to music theory in a very easy to understand manner. He is very patient and creates a safe and supportive environment in which to learn comfortably. I am SO glad I found him!!! His way of teaching really works or me ~ I feel hopeful, inspired and motivated for the first time ever in attempting to learn this instrument. Thank you Paul and Thank You Take Lessons !!”

No one should leave strings more than 3 months. If your usage is sporadic, you probably need new strings every time you pick up the guitar. Busy professionals will change them ever few weeks. A lot of pros I know change them routinely on the first of every month. That way they always know how old the strings are. If they have recording session or a critical concert coming up toward the end of the month, it’s time to change strings. If you get paid at all for playing, even tips in your guitar case, it makes sense to allocate some of that to keeping your guitar sounding its best.

Now we’re going to learn the C major chord, which is a great chord to see if you are coming down on the tips of your fingers or not. Tweaking your fretting hand posture just a little makes a big difference in the sound of the chord.

The thickest and bass string (E bass) is the lower one, while the thinnest and acute string (E acute) is the top one. The other ones follow the same logic that the instrument represents. In each string, we put the number that represents the fret of the fretboard that should be pressed. Check it below:

Watching Jeff effortlessly play the most challenging  guitar classics is inspiring. He knows the top-secret stuff, and really enjoys sharing his wealth of guitar technique. Beginners will enjoy Jeff’s patience and sense of humor; advanced students will appreciate Jeff’s ability to deconstruct high-level rock and metal guitar. Jeff started his musical journey at the age of 12, with a beat up acoustic guitar, in a small town in Pennsylvania.  He spent a few years locked in…

The six vertical lines represent the six strings on the guitar. From left to right; low E string, A string, D string, G string, B string and high E string or also called: 6th, 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st string.

They are never going to get easier if you don’t practice them. If you play an acoustic guitar these are going to take a lot of pressure, and you are going to have to build some hand strength for them to even start to sound OK.

But it’s not just beginners who are catered for, as advanced players can explore foundation courses for three different styles of music: blues, country or rock, with two course levels per style. Aside from learning techniques, there is also a bank of 700 different song lessons, covering artists like The Beatles, Blink 182, Pearl Jam and Metallica, although you can check out the full song list here.

The more styles you can improvise over confidently the more well rounded of a musician you will become. Be sure to check out every video guitar backing track I upload because you will definitely learn something by improvising many times over all of them.

If you see “PM,” play using palm muting. For standard right-handed guitar playing, gently lay the edge of your right palm across the strings near the guitar’s bridge. When you strike the notes (with the same hand as is providing the mute), you should hear the tone of the note, but with a subdued, dead quality. Move your hand slightly up the strings toward the neck to deaden the notes more.

I liken it to the way many business men or women have a certain way of categorizing the names of people they have just met. If they hang around those new people enough they aren’t gonna have to go through a little mental routine whenever they want to remember a person’s name, they will simply know their name without thinking. That is what you are aiming for in these lessons.

For example, students enrolling on the Rock Guitar course will be tutored by none other than Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X) – who is considered a true great and has consistently been voted as one of the fastest guitarists of all time. Paul is probably one of the best teachers to have when it comes to online electric guitar lessons. Electric Country guitar lessons are taken by one of Nashville’s leading guitarists Guthrie Trapp; flatpicking virtuoso Bryan Sutton is in charge of Bluegrass Guitar lessons; while Nathan East – one of the most popular and recorded bassists of all time – is just one of the bass instructors for ArtistWorks. It’s hard to rival this kind of instruction.

In this case, the finger that was pressing the 5th fret on A string should slide down (vertically) in a way that the sound comes from the 3rd fret. Notice that this finger from the left hand is taking the function that would be for the right hand playing the 5th string when the 3rd fret was being pressed.

Of course, this top-down lecturing is all very abstract without examples. Let me give you the worst case scenario. My school talent show, 2008. Two friends of mine performED an ambitious but utterly inappropriate Metallica cover in front of the other students, their parents and the faculty. It was excruciating. Although the solos (presumably the only thing they had bothered to practice) were technically flawless, the whole song was undone by their terrible rhythm. The timing of the song became displaced, the chords were so badly fingered that it was difficult to hear the riff and consequently the whole performance fell apart. They looked like morons. They had sacrificed learning basic rhythm and paid the price. Make sure you don’t do the same.

Repetitive open-tunings are used for two non-Spanish classical-guitars. For the English guitar the open chord is C major (C-E-G-C-E-G);[67] for the Russian guitar which has seven strings, G major (G-B-D-G-B-D-G).[68] Mixing a perfect fourth and a minor third with a major third, these tunings are on-average major-thirds regular-tunings. While on-average major-thirds tunings are conventional open tunings, properly major-thirds tunings are unconventional open-tunings, because they have augmented triads as their open chords.[69]

A standard for many electric guitars. XL Nickel Wound, D’Addario’s most popular electric guitar strings, are precision wound with nickelplated steel onto a carefully drawn, hexagonally shaped, high carbon steel core.

“While it’s obvious how useful this is for songwriters working on their own compositions, or professionals doing manual transcriptions, it’s equally powerful for amateurs saving songs from the web to their own library of tabs. Apps like Ultimate Guitar are focused purely on consumption—charging a subscription for users to access tabs. But many of those tabs are, well, just wrong. With TabBank, if a lyric isn’t right, or you hear a chord that just doesn’t work, you can fix it, listen to the updated chord progression in the app, and changes are saved automatically, forever. With other apps, you’ll stumble over that same wrong note every single time.”

Each guitar string brand has specific characteristics, either a method of wrapping the wires or a specialty Phosphor coating. Three common brands are Elixir, Ernie Ball, and D’Addario. Some details of each are described below.

Becky is awesome. My job takes away most of my time and because of that I haven’t been able to be very regular in attending all sessions. She had been very patient with me and adjusted the pace as needed for a student like me. She is an enthusiastic teacher and I would recommend Becky as the first guitar teacher for students of all ages. Keep rocking Becky!

Phosphor Bronze – which is similar to 80/20 bronze, but with phosphor added to prevent oxidation and increase the life of the strings.  The trade-off is that they’re a little less-bright in comparison.

When first learning to play the guitar, finger strength and agility have not yet developed nor have calluses. At this stage, for both electric guitar strings and acoustic guitar strings, ease of play is most important. Lighter gauge steel electric and acoustic strings are easier on the fingers. Silk and steel strings are marketed specifically for new guitar players as are Phosphor Bronze strings.

In this week’s guitar lesson, you’ll learn an easy to play solo blues composition that’s played solo guitar (no accompaniment). The licks are all played on the bottom 3 strings to give you ideas for leads that you can play using lower notes.

Inlays are visual elements set into the exterior surface of a guitar, both for decoration and artistic purposes and, in the case of the markings on the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 12th fret (and in higher octaves), to provide guidance to the performer about the location of frets on the instrument. The typical locations for inlay are on the fretboard, headstock, and on acoustic guitars around the soundhole, known as the rosette. Inlays range from simple plastic dots on the fretboard to intricate works of art covering the entire exterior surface of a guitar (front and back). Some guitar players have used LEDs in the fretboard to produce unique lighting effects onstage. Fretboard inlays are most commonly shaped like dots, diamond shapes, parallelograms, or large blocks in between the frets.

Bending: Bending is a pretty common element of Tab. You can tell that you are supposed to bend a note by an upward pointing arrow next to one or more numbers. The distance you are to bend the note will be defined by an indicator next to the arrow. It might be a “full” bend or a “1/2” bend. Once you are exposed to a couple of bends you will quickly catch on to the basic idea.
