Also, if there is a lick that you would like for me to cover please let me know about it. I am doing a new one of these Lick Of The Week guitar lessons every week so I want to know what you guys want to see!
The twelve-string guitar usually has steel strings, and it is widely used in folk music, blues, and rock and roll. Rather than having only six strings, the 12-string guitar has six courses made up of two strings each, like a mandolin or lute. The highest two courses are tuned in unison, while the others are tuned in octaves. The 12-string guitar is also made in electric forms. The chime-like sound of the 12-string electric guitar was the basis of jangle pop.
In this week’s guitar lesson, you’ll learn an easy to play solo blues composition that’s played solo guitar (no accompaniment). The licks are all played on the bottom 3 strings to give you ideas for leads that you can play using lower notes.
I am a musician who loves to teach guitar. Whether it’s blues guitar, jazz guitar, popular music guitar or bass guitar, I love to teach it. I’ve been teaching guitar in the Los Angeles area for nearly 30 years. My main connection of teaching is through McCabe’s guitar shop in Santa Monica. I teach privates lessons in my home in Venice California. I am an active musician who plays many diverse types of music including jazz, blues and bluegrass.
There are other dozens techniques less common and that are not standardized. The author of tabs should, in this case, indicate the meaning of the notation in some corner of the tabs to avoid confusion.
The playing of (3-5 string) guitar chords is simplified by the class of alternative tunings called regular tunings, in which the musical intervals are the same for each pair of consecutive strings. Regular tunings include major-thirds tuning, all-fourths, and all-fifths tunings. For each regular tuning, chord patterns may be diagonally shifted down the fretboard, a property that simplifies beginners’ learning of chords and that simplifies advanced players’ improvisation. On the other hand, in regular tunings 6-string chords (in the keys of C, G, and D) are more difficult to play.
…I’m very happy with these lessons. Everything is explained very clearly and I feel that I’m really making progress. So thank you for everything. I really appreciate your quick and detailed response, encouraging words, and practical advice. I’ll start practicing,

Tablature is common for fretted stringed instruments such as the lute, vihuela, or guitar, as well as many free reed aerophones such as the harmonica. Tablature was common during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and is commonly used today in notating rock, pop, folk, ragtime, bluegrass, and blues music.
Others do it by playing hours – but that method isn’t great either. Because strings get worn out over time even if you don’t play them. A guitar sitting untouched for 2 years will surely need a new set of strings once you start playing again.
Speaking from the standpoint of a colleague of Nadav’s for many years and professional musician/educator myself, Nadav is the real deal. He is my top recommendation, without question, for anyone looking to study the guitar and/or music in general.
I suggest working you way down the page and making sure that you know ALL the chords and when you find one that you don’t know – click on it and do the lesson. That said I would STRONGLY suggest going all the way through the Beginners Course. (if you have not done so already) because there are many hints on the chords and more importantly, how to use and practice them!
A later hit song built around power chords was “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks, released in 1964.[12] This song’s riffs exhibit fast power-chord changes. The Who’s guitarist, Pete Townshend, performed power chords with a theatrical windmill-strum,[13][14] for example in “My Generation”.[15] On King Crimson’s Red album, Robert Fripp thrashed with power chords.[16] Power chords are important in many of punk rock music. Many punk guitarists used only power chords in their songs, most notably Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Johnny Ramone.
The other consideration is that if you’re not careful, you could actually end up spending more at Justin Guitar than the price of a full year membership from the websites listed above. How you ask? Well, all the free lessons at Justin Guitar lead you towards buying a guide book or DVD course. So it’s free, but with strings attached. That’s how most things work on the Internet.
Phosphor Bronze – which is similar to 80/20 bronze, but with phosphor added to prevent oxidation and increase the life of the strings. The trade-off is that they’re a little less-bright in comparison.
Ocean Waves as we all know are one of the most relaxing sounds we could ever hear. Often times when we feel sad, anxious, overwhelmed, we often think about or go the beach or sea side to think and listen to the ocean waves. The sound of ocean waves are very consoling, easing and reassuring, we feel good and relaxed whenever we hear it. Embedded ocean waves in our study music is a perfect recipe to helps us relax while we study or just relax in general.

The guitar is a fretted musical instrument that usually has six strings.[1] The sound is projected either acoustically, using a hollow wooden or plastic and wood box (for an acoustic guitar), or through electrical amplifier and a speaker (for an electric guitar). It is typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the fingers, thumb or fingernails of the right hand or with a pick while fretting (or pressing against the frets) the strings with the fingers of the left hand. The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either gut, nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the gittern, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument.
In this case, you should play the 5th fret of D string, and then the 7th fret of the same string. After that you should play the 5th fret of G string and so on. Observation: the number zero represents the free string (without pressing any fret), for example:
We promote progress by marking students’ achievements with awards and certificates. By completing monthly practice plans, graduating to new books and performing in recitals, students receive awards that keep them excited about learning.
Only two or three frets are needed for the guitar chords—major, minor, and dominant sevenths—which are emphasized in introductions to guitar-playing and to the fundamentals of music.[87][88] Each major and minor chord can be played on exactly two successive frets on exactly three successive strings, and therefore each needs only two fingers. Other chords—seconds, fourths, sevenths, and ninths—are played on only three successive frets.[89]

I find that the biggest challenge in learning something new, is keeping my own internal critic under control as I struggle with note reading, and learn how to play the guitar. The fact that Steve is so patient and never critical helps to offset my internal critic. I have felt self doubting in the first two lessons, but by lesson 3, I am confident that if I keep practicing and working with Steve, eventually I will get it.

Hybrids of acoustic and electric guitars are also common. There are also more exotic varieties, such as guitars with two, three,[12] or rarely four necks, all manner of alternate string arrangements, fretless fingerboards (used almost exclusively on bass guitars, meant to emulate the sound of a stand-up bass), 5.1 surround guitar, and such.
It consists in hammering one string in a specific fret using the right hand instead of the left one. It is the same technique that we saw on the “rolls” (Hammer-on and Pull-off), but made by the right hand instead of the left one. Who spread this technique was the guitarist Edie Van Hallen in the 80ies. But there are some records of this technique being used long before this, even before Van Hallen was born. So he cannot be considered the “creator” of Tapping. The fact is that, after him, this technique became wide spread and incorporated in solos of millions of guitarists and bass players.

You could play the same 3 notes you just played only using your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fingers. Cramming all 3 fingers in at the 4th fret could be difficult, but this may be easier than the other options for some people. You could even try playing these 3 notes with your 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers.
